  • Paris and Perfume- Part One

I just returned from Paris a few days ago- it was a short trip but one that was very specifically about perfume.  We began at the Palais Royale, where we visited the ‘shrine to perfume’- the Serge Luten boutique.  It is an oasis of purple calm, beautifully adorned, dimly lit and hosted by a lovely

  • the Jasmine

Hello!  Bonjour!  How time is flying by!  School continues, and we had another field trip recently. We returned to the farm in Pegamo and saw the fields of jasmine that are right beside the fields of Roses that we toured in May.  These crops are also produced exclusively for Chanel.  The jasmine of Grasse is incredible!

  • perfumery 101 con’t

It’s Tuesday evening, (it was another gorgeous hot sunny day today) and I’m at home listening to the soundtrack to the movie City of God……cooking dinner on my little plug-in two burner (wild prawns, pasta, broccoflower, pasta, biologique tomato sauce..) lamenting my absolute lack of counter space, and thinking about the formula I’m working on

Hello everyone! It’s been awhile since my last entry. Time has been flying by with the commencement of school and the settling back in to a groove here in Provence. Summer is still lingering on, with the days hot and sunny and the last few tourists wandering the streets taking photos and annoying the French by not

  • Returning to France

Here I am back in France after 3 weeks away in Canada.   I have been finding it a bit difficult re-entering as I seem to have forgotten my French!  Hopefully it won’t take too long to get it back.  I’ve been told by 2 different people that Michel Thomas has a learning system that really works.

Just to let everyone know who has been looking for me; and likely having emails bounced back, I have been in Canada for the last 2 weeks sorting out some details before returning to France (at the end of this month) for the next leg of the journey. My email developed some serious problems the day I arrived here and

  • Interning in Robertet

Today I was given a full tour of Robertet, the company with whom I have been an intern for the last 3 weeks. I’m not sure how many acres the whole plant takes up, but suffice to say that there is a collection of little scooters for employess to travel from one side of the

  • le stage -or- if I didn’t know how to say ‘fenouil’ before, I do now!

Today was Monday of the second week of my internship in the Grasse based company Robertet. www.robertet.com  I am working in both cometics/application, and the perfumery departments.   So far, the days are long, French-speaking, but facinationg and I am gaining insights into the industry that being in school has not able to provide.  I am working on a

  • Fields of Lavender

Friday, the 29th of June, was our last day of school and we marked it by going on a much anticipated field trip to the Lavender growing region past Aix-en-Provence, up in the mountains behind a beautiful town called Mane. We left the school quite early in the morning and after driving for 2 hours

  • Guy Robert and Questions: Natural vs Synthetic?

Our discussion revolves around the complexities of natural versus synthetic materials in perfumery, highlighted by the visit of perfumer Guy Robert. He emphasizes that categorizing materials as “natural” or “synthetic” can be misleading, considering the intricacies of chemistry involved in both. We reflect on the exploration of essential oils and perfumes, recognizing that both natural and synthetic elements can contribute to beauty in scent. Can we therefore advocate for a balanced perspective, urging openness…
